It is available as a colourless liquid which is soluble in water. It has a melting point of 84 C and a boiling point of 77 C. Acrylonitrile is synthesized by the catalytic ammoxidation of propylene, also known as the SOHIO process. It decomposes in the atmosphere by reacting with oxygen and hydroxyl radical to form formyl cyanide and formaldehyde.
