Barfoeds reagent by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries is a high grade reagent. This reagent solution consists of a 0.33 molar solution of neutral copper acetate in 1% acetic acid solution. It is utilized in Barfoeds test which is based on the reduction of copper(II) acetate to copper(I) oxide (Cu2O), which forms a brick-red precipitate. This test is similar to the reaction of Fehling's solution with aldehydes. It is advised to prepare this reagent when required, and quickly utilize it before expiry. In this test reaction, the aldehyde group of monosaccharides which normally form a cyclic hemiacetal, is oxidized to the carboxylate. Disaccharide sugars may also react in this test, but the reaction is much slower. Sodium chloride along with various other substances can interfere with this test. This reagent is suitable for industrial synthesis of products and research applications.
