This reagent is available as a powder which is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as nitrobenzene. An orange coloured Bathocuproine-Cu(I) complex can be extracted with n-hexylalcohol or iso-amylalcohol, whose maximum wavelength is 479 nm. While this reagent is stable under general conditions it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
