Benzocaine by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries is a high grade reagent. Also known by the brand name Orajel, this compound is an ethyl ester of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). This reagent is available as a powder which is sparingly soluble in water and very soluble in ethanol. It has a melting point of 88 90C. While this reagent is stable under general conditions, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. Benzocaine can be generated from PABA and ethanol by Fischer esterification or via the reduction of ethyl p-nitrobenzoate.
