The CCHC-type Zinc Finger Nucleic Acid Binding Protein CNBP/ZNF9 is conserved in eukaryotes and essential for embryonic development in mammals. It has been implicated in transcriptional as well as post-transcriptional gene regulation; however, its nucleic acid ligands and molecular function remain elusive. CNBP interacts with mature mRNAs in G-rich regions and it has been proposed to enhance translation by resolving stable structures on mRNAs. It has recently been reported that LAST, a c-Myc-inducible long noncoding RNA, cooperates with CNBP to promote CCND1 mRNA stability in human cells leading to the abundance of cyclin D1, an important regulator of cell cycle.
