The reagent is available as a colourless liquid which is moderately soluble in water. It has a melting point of 47 C and a boiling point of 166 C. Diacetone alcohol can be produced by the Ba(OH)2-catalyzed condensation of two molecules of acetone. While it is stable under general conditions, this reagent is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
