The reagent is available as a colourless liquid which is miscible in water. It has a melting point of 8 C, and a boiling point of 116 C. Ethylene diamine can be obtained from 1,2-dichloroethane and ammonia under pressure at 180 C in an aqueous medium. While it is stable under general conditions, this reagent is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
