Description
Monothioglycerol is a high-grade reagent supplied by Research Lab Fine Chem Industries. 3-Mercapto-1,2-propanediol, 1-Thioglycerol and 3-Mercaptopropane-1,2-diol are some of the other chemical names used to denote this compound. It is available in the form of clear, viscous liquid with a slightly sulfidic odour which gives a stench. Monothioglycerol has a boiling point of 118C. It is slightly soluble in water, miscible with alcohol but insoluble in ether. It is stable as long it is stored as per the recommended storage conditions. It is sensitive to air and must be stored in air-tight containers. Burning or prolonged exposure to heat or flammable sources can generate hazardous decomposition products like carbon oxides and sulphur oxides. It is incompatible with bases, alkali metals, oxidising and reducing agents. CAS No. 96-27-5 Quantity provided: 100 ml/bottle Molecular formula: C3H8O2S Molecular weight: 108.155 g/mol Assay: Minimum 98%Monothioglycerol is primarily used as a matrix in fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and liquid secondary ion mass spectrometry. It is also used as a reagent in analytical chemistry, materials science, and cell culture research. In materials and biomaterials science, 1-thioglycerol has been used in the preparation of thiol modified gold surfaces for human immunoglobulin binding and of water soluble luminescent CdS quantum dots. Cell culture studies have shown that many cell lines use monothioglycerol to undergo proliferation.
