It is available as a white powder which is poorly soluble in water. It has a melting point of 1872 C. Pure tantalum hydrogen fluoride solution is neutralised with aqueous ammonia to give hydrated tantalum oxide, which is calcinated to yield tantalum pentoxide. While this reagent is stable under general conditions, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing reagents.
