The reagent is available as a dark-brown or black powder which is insoluble in water. It decomposes to Tb2O3 upon melting. Terbium oxide is usually generated by ignition of the oxalate at or the sulfate in air. While this reagent is stable under general conditions, it is incompatible with strong oxidizing reagents.
