Thiostrepton exhibits antibiotic activity through blockade of ribosome turnover after an elongation step in protein synthesis by inhibiting both the dissociation of elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome and the release of inorganic phosphate from EF-G following GTP hydrolysis.
